The founder of QuizTrail, Tom Merchant, loves walking and travelling

GO
The founder of QuizTrail, Tom Merchant, loves walking and travelling - especially discovering new places - and is a self-confessed map addict. While living in the UAE with his family, Tom worked for the Crown Prince of Dubai on some of the world’s most high-profile hotel development projects. A friend organised treasure hunt games where families, in their 4x4s, followed trails set out on photocopied sheets searching for answers to trivia questions at waypoints along the route. The friend and his wife organised the trails brilliantly, finishing with a barbecue in their beachfront garden. The seed of an idea had been planted.

Tom and his family moved back to East Sussex in England and his idea of developing a modern day

GO
Tom and his family moved back to East Sussex in England and his idea of developing a modern day treasure hunt-style game started to evolve. He was keen to ensure that it became a platform that everyone could use; families on a day out, tourists exploring new places, friends out and about or people discovering new aspects of familiar surroundings. In addition, he wanted to create a new fund-raising tool for charities.

GO
After some consideration, Tom hired a London-based web and application development firm to help refine the idea. Tom was keen to maintain the emphasis on making it as easy as possible for anyone to set up trails of their own using the platform and to make sure that the Trails provide an engaging experience for users and one which brands could use to enhance revenues.

A test app was built to make sure that the technology would work as accurately as the specification required. Tom and his wife were in Spain for a friend's wedding and staying at a hotel in Granada on the day that the test harness was ready. Tom set a dummy-run Trail around the Alhambra and spent a few anxious hours walking around the ancient grounds testing the fledgling software. It worked perfectly.

GO
The software was developed into a user-friendly version of those desert treasure hunts, using smart phones instead of photocopied sheets. It was purpose-designed for user-generated content, so that anyone can be a 'Trailblazer' setting their own trails readily and easily. A great deal of thought went into the name of the new App and when the domain QuizTrail.com became available in the US at just the right time, it seemed the perfect choice. QuizTrail was born.
